The Last Oracle of Delphi

The gods were losing their power. With it, too, was the strength of the Oracle of Delphi. She struggled daily to see the future of the Olympians and the Greeks. Visions became blurry as she looked into the fire each day. Bits and pieces came to her, but they were never as fluid and together as they once were. She prayed to Apollo each night. Surely he could help her save the gods from the infestation of Roman impostors.

One night, her wish finally came true. A full prophecy came to her mind as she slept. When she rose from her bed, she noticed a hawk sitting at the end of her bed.

“Lord Apollo, I have prayed for so long, and only now has the future come,” she said in a daze. As with most Oracles, visions cause the head to feel fuzzy as a side effect after a true prophecy.

“Oracle, what have you seen? Is there a way to save us?” Apollo asked.

She sat up and closed her eyes to remember everything she saw. “The end of Mount Olympus is at hand. If nothing is to be done, the gods will disappear. There is only one way to save them. There is a maiden warrior among an army of men. A maiden whose’ fate will be sealed if the gods do not step in. The God of War must meet this woman to save his celestial family. He must fall in true love and marry while her maidenhood is intact. The child that follows will live among all mortals as long as this world turns to keep the Olympians from fading out of existence.”

The god of prophecy sighed. He knew for a fact that Ares would not like this news. He enjoyed the freedom of being a bachelor and sleeping with Aphrodite and various mortals. To marry a woman and not take her maidenhood beforehand would need a lot of convincing. “Thank you, Oracle,” he said to her. “I believe that you will be my last true oracle. If Ares agrees to this task, I want you to be freed from seclusion and create your own family. I want your talents to pass on to aid other pantheons of the future. The Oracle no longer needs to be a virgin maiden to see the future.” He lifted his wings as a dull light flowed over the woman. He blessed her descendants. Her bloodline was of the “true” Oracle that would help not only the future gods in peril but also aid an extraordinary girl who was meant to be reborn for many, many lifetimes.
